In East Berlin, only some steps away from the landmark television tower that has become an instantly recognisable symbol of the city, a sparkling white facade adorns a sprawling building. This jewel of a place is in fact Hotel LUX 11 Berlin Mitte, a place created to attract individualists from around the world with its modern, futuristic ambience.

In the lobby, picture-stills reflect the vibrancy of the nearby streets – the restaurants, galleries and boutiques and the trendy, creative people who fill them with their energy. The AVEDA hairsalon of Beate Kahlcke is on the ground floor.

Then three staircases wind around old-fashioned lifts to a series of rooms that feel like a very, very stylish version of home… all in cool shades of pale green, with smooth blonde-wood detail.

It is simply a study in melding the old with the new. Set in what was originally built as a stately home in the late 19th century and which later became office space under communism, the landmark structure has been completely refurbished to reflect the transformation of Berlin in recent times.

The Lux 11 look is also unique in its use of materials and its pleasing use of contrasts – something that truly comes into its own in each of the 72 apartments’ impeccable design.

A well thought out menu, stylish interior and professional, friendly staff are all hallmarks of a good eatery and while Luchs Restaurant and Bar boasts all of the above, its sophistication and unpretentious atmosphere is what earmarks it as a classic. Part of the Lux11 Design Hotel in Berlin’s Mitte district, Luchs is managed by Hilke Saul and Matthias Peschke, previously of Schoenbrunn in Volkspark Friedrichshain.

Cooking exclusively with ingredients of the highest quality, head chef Christian Khalaf’s skill and competence underscore his creative interpretations of Italian classics. The melt-in-your-mouth Argentinian beef in red wine sauce is luxuriously tender and the heavy flavors are expertly complemented by a neat parcel of creamed salsify with orange and thyme. The unexpected pairing of fresh shiitake mushrooms with strips of veal on home-made tagliatelle ravishes the tastebuds while the classic Tiramisu is the ideal ending to the luscious experience.

Designed by architects Efe Erenler and Paul Bauer, the warm hues of mahogany and grey that lace throughout add a slight sense of tradition to the modern interior, achieving a comfortable, unobtrusive ambience. The spacious bar purveys a well curated wine list as well as assorted cocktails, not to mention charming beats from resident DJ Clé.
